One Foot in Heaven

Burned the candle at both ends
Burned up all the midnight oil
Here I stand
Soot on my hands
Nothing left to make my blood boil

CHORUS
Crazy times will go on forever
I was certain up until today
Dancing on the head of a needle
Got one foot in heaven
With hell to pay
One foot in heaven
With hell to pay

The highway of life has an exit
Marked with a bright dollar sign
Driving by feel
One hand on the wheel
Inching closer to the borderline
CHORUS

Whiskey train keeps a-rolling
To the station up at kingdom come
Keep filling my glass
Making time pass
Go for broke my one rule of thumb
CHORUS

Fred...beautiful song...very thought provoking lyrically...a sad song and a cello...you can't go wrong there...really nice vocal and a super acoustic guitar track...top-shelf for sure.

Great lines!

Well done in all aspects. The mix setup up a great soundstage on our monitors.

Enjoyed it!

Great haunting sounds in this one Fred with introspective lyrics. It sure came out well. Would have loved to see the Biab tracks you used.

Hi, Fred.

Nice and moody! Love the sound - vocals, backing tracking, all of it. Lots of cool things going on with the arrangement, and well sung.

Technically, a needle doesn't have a head; that would be a pin. wink

Thanks. As for pins and needles, I’m glad I renewed my poetic license…

That's one heckuva good opening verse.

The song has an ethereal quality. The addition of the string instruments adds to the mood.

Memorable tune.

Thanks. The first verse jumped out one morning as I awoke. Set the tone for the rest of the song.

Sad story sung with very emotional vocal. "Driving by feel/One hand on the wheel" effective image. The band sounds excellent, the cello especially works nicely with your voice, the background guitar and the percussion track add nice haunting effect.

Hi Fred,

Love the song and it's dark lyrics. Your voice is very good.
Liked how you sing the chorus, delicious..., even for a highway to hell!
The cello is a very good choice for this song. Some wrote the word 'haunting', but sad is a better description I would say.

One question: on you site on BandCamp I saw the song is from febuary, 2010. Is this the same one or a remix?
Still, a good one!

I love the dark mood you create with both the lyrics and the really good choice of instruments.
I think this is my new favorite song of yours.
Well done!

Thanks, Hans.

The 2010 date is from when I started posting my non-album songs to the “album” Proving Grounds. I wrote this song two years ago.

Thanks, B.D. I’m a bit surprised that so many like this song, as dark as it is. On the other hand, Leonard Cohen went much darker….
